MWL Secretary-General Discusses Dangers of AI-Generated Hate Speech at New York University

New york: Muslim World League (MWL) Secretary-General and Organization of Muslim Scholars Chairman Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa delivered a lecture at New York University and engaged in a dialogue addressing the dangers of using artificial intelligence to promote hate speech on social media.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the session focused on the role of community and religious institutions in studying the roots of inflammatory discourse and implementing data-driven solutions to combat it. Al-Issa reviewed the key technical challenges driving this issue, including the automatic generation of discriminatory text, images, or videos and algorithmic targeting that feeds polarizing content to specific user groups. He also highlighted the risks of digital amplification through coordinated bot networks, the use of deepfakes to defame or incite hostility, and recommendation algorithms that prioritize provocative content to maximize engagement.

Addressing the regulatory and ethical landscape, Al-Issa noted that using AI to spread hate speech requires a delicate legal balance between ensuring legitimate freedom of expression and protecting societies from incitement. He emphasized the critical need to clearly define the legal responsibilities of digital actors and technology platforms in safeguarding the global information landscape.
