Riyadh: Ministers responsible for the Food Safety Committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held their 10th meeting today via video conference. The meeting was chaired by Bahraini Minister of Health Dr. Jalila bint Al-Sayed Jawad Hassan, who is the current chair of the Ministerial Committee for Food Safety. It was attended by committee members and Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Development Affairs at the GCC General Secretariat Khalid Ali Al-Sunaidi.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the meeting discussed several key topics, most notably the unified food law for GCC countries. Participants agreed to transform the law into binding unified regulations without changing its current content, to be applied for two years. During this period, a draft of the executive regulations will be prepared in its current form. The law and its executive regulations are expected to be adopted in 2029.
The meeting also reviewed and approved a mechanism for imposing and lifting bans on imports of food of animal origin on a guiding basis, in addition to other agenda items on which appropriate decisions were taken.
