Agricultural Hope Blooms in Najran: Sandalwood and Aloeswood Cultivation Experiment

Najran: Fueled by optimism, an agricultural experiment to cultivate sandalwood and aloeswood is underway in Najran as part of the Jazan Mountainous Development Authority’s third-phase project across the Kingdom, with approximately 200 seedlings planted on three regional farms.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Agricultural Committee Chairman at the Najran Chamber Ali Al-Harith stated that Najran’s inclusion in the national sandalwood cultivation map aligns with the Kingdom Vision 2030 goals, aiming to boost the local economy, achieve sustainable development, and diversify income through the economically and aromatically valuable sandalwood. He highlighted Najran’s favorable agricultural conditions, mainly its moderate climate, fertile soil, and ample water, which are expected to contribute to the success of this initiative and build on previous successes with crops such as rice, sesame, and coffee.

Al-Harith emphasized the economic, environmental, and cultural benefits of sandalwood, noting its deep roots in
Saudi heritage and its use in celebrations. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts to raise awareness about the agricultural benefits and proper care of these trees.

Farmer Qasila Al Hamam, who has been tending 60 seedlings for six months in Rir, said that although sandalwood and aloeswood require special care, they are valuable sources of fragrance and natural oils for both local and international markets, particularly sandalwood oil that is widely used in the perfume and cosmetics industries.

This cultivation offers new investment opportunities, strengthens the national economy, supports sustainable development, and preserves environmental heritage for future generations.
