Haramain High-Speed Railway Expands Capacity for Hajj Pilgrims

Jeddah: The Haramain High-Speed Railway, a key part of Saudi Arabia's transportation network and one of the fastest electric railways globally, has announced an ambitious plan to accommodate the influx of pilgrims during the Hajj season. In collaboration with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR), the railway is set to operate over 5,300 train trips from the 1st to the 20th of Dhu Al-Qidah, offering more than 2.21 million seats. This marks an increase of over 210,000 seats compared to the same period last year.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Haramain High-Speed Railway plays a crucial role in the Kingdom's railway expansion strategy. It connects major cities in the western region, including Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and providing safe transportation for pilgrims and travelers. The railway spans 453 kilometers, linking Madinah and Makkah with a main line of 449 kilometers and a branch line connecting to King Abdulaziz International Airport.

The railway operates 35 electric trains, each capable of carrying 417 passengers. The configuration includes business and economy-class carriages, as well as a restaurant car. The airport station at King Abdulaziz International Airport is the largest of its kind globally, featuring six platforms and spanning over 105,000 square meters.

Trains are equipped with amenities such as restaurants, entertainment screens, and services for passengers with disabilities. Business-class passengers receive complimentary hospitality services, while economy-class passengers can access onboard food carts. SAR has also enhanced passenger experience by introducing VIP lounges at key stations and upgrading ticket sales offices.

In its initial phase from 2018 to 2020, the railway transported around one million passengers. Since its full operational phase began in March 2021, it has carried over 30 million passengers. SAR has also established additional facilities and services, such as a temporary camp at the Madinah station and shuttle buses to the Prophet's Mosque, to further improve the travel experience for pilgrims.
