Handicrafts and Cuisine Highlight Egypt’s Rich Heritage

Riyadh: Egypt boasts a diverse cultural heritage, encompassing traditional arts, crafts, music, cuisine, and sports. This cultural wealth has earned UNESCO recognition, with several elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Notable examples include hand-weaving, tahteeb (stick game), Al-Sirah Al-Hilaliyyah epic, horse-related industries, koshary dish, and the semsemiah instrument, which was registered through collaboration with Saudi Arabia.

According to Saudi Press Agency, handicrafts and creative goods form a vital part of Egypt's historical legacy, influencing national industries and the local economy. The traditional pottery and ceramics industry reflects Egypt's artisanal heritage, while the production of wicker from palm fronds remains significant.

The semsemiah instrument also serves as a living symbol of Egyptian identity, accompanying celebrations and struggles, particularly in the Suez Canal region. In 2024, its craftsmanship was jointly registered by Saudi Arabia and Egypt on UNESCO's List, emphasizing its cultural importance.

Furthermore, Egypt's culinary diversity is highlighted by traditional dishes like ful medames, ta'ameya, and koshary, the latter recognized by UNESCO in 2025, reinforcing the global appreciation of Egyptian heritage.
