Giza: The Boxing Week, accompanying the "Glory in Giza" event, kicked off today on the Giza Plateau in Egypt. Organized by The Ring and Matchroom magazines, the event is sponsored by Riyadh Season.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the opening day featured the official "Face Off" showdown between the champions of the fights included in the card. The event combined the historical symbolism of the location with the presence of a selection of international boxers, setting the stage for the highly anticipated boxing night to be held near the Pyramids.
The card headlines the heavyweight bout between Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk and the Dutch Rico Verhoeven, a highly anticipated fight. Alongside this, a number of international bouts are scheduled across various weight classes, including super middleweight, welterweight, superfly, light heavyweight, and cruiserweight, featuring international and Arab boxers representing diverse fighting styles. The accompanying bouts feature several high-profile matches, including Britain's Hamzah Sheeraz versus Germany's Alem Begic for the vacant WBO Super Middleweight World Title, and Uzbekistan's Shakhram Giyasov versus Britain's Jack Catterall for the WBA Regular Welterweight Title. Also on the card is the women's bout between Japan's Mizuki Hiruta and Egypt's Mai Soliman for The Ring and WBO Super Flyweight titles, respectively.
The card also boasts a strong Arab presence, with several Egyptian boxers competing alongside Saudi Arabia's Sultan Al-Mohammed, who will be fighting on the card, continuing the trend of Saudi boxers participating in major international sporting events.
Fight Week continues tomorrow with Media Day and the Grand Arrival event, ahead of Saturday night for the main event, "Glory in Giza."
