Riyadh: The National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plants Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa Center) achieved a notable international milestone, as its animal health laboratory in Riyadh Region obtained broad international recognition from 33 countries, including 27 European Union member states, the United States, Japan, as well as several Gulf and regional countries such as Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Yemen, to conduct laboratory testing for equine diseases related to their movement between these countries.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this achievement reflects the advanced position the Kingdom has reached in international laboratory work and boosts its role in supporting and regulating the movement, import, and export of horses, while affirming its active presence in equestrian competitions at both local and international levels.
The international recognition stems from a reliable laboratory system based on precise procedures and quality outputs, contributing to greater efficiency in laboratory testing within the Kingdom and improved reliability of its results according to the highest international standards. It represents the outcome of an integrated development journey led by the center from 2021 to 2025.
This role has been reinforced in practice by enabling the export of horses with approved national certificates, highlighting the center's efficiency in diagnosing the most specific diseases associated with international equine movement, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives to develop the livestock and equestrian sector and enhance the Kingdom's presence in global forums.
