Urgent Catheterization Saves Kyrgyz Pilgrim from Life-Threatening Pulmonary Embolism at King Abdullah Medical City

Makkah: A rapid medical intervention at King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah saved the life of a Kyrgyz pilgrim who suffered a severe and potentially fatal pulmonary embolism during the Hajj season.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Makkah Health Cluster confirmed that the pilgrim was admitted under a comprehensive medical alert system, demonstrating the facility’s high level of readiness and swift response capabilities for critical emergencies during the pilgrimage.

Upon initial assessment, the medical team diagnosed a high-risk pulmonary embolism, an acute condition requiring immediate intervention. The hospital promptly activated the Pulmonary Embolism Rapid Response Team, comprising specialists in pulmonology, intensive care, and interventional radiology.

The patient was quickly transferred to the catheterization unit, where a targeted clot-dissolving medication was administered directly into the pulmonary artery using advanced catheter-based technology. This minimally invasive procedure is employed in life-threatening cases to rapidly restore blood flow by dissolving obstructive clots.

Led by the Interventional Radiology Unit, the delicate procedure was performed with high precision and resulted in a significant improvement in the patient’s vital signs. Following the intervention, the patient was moved to the intensive care unit, where his condition was stabilized and closely monitored under stringent safety protocols.
