Paris: The Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), during its 216th session, commended the "Arab Latinos!" initiative, highlighting its importance as an effective institutional platform for promoting intercultural dialogue and supporting efforts to adopt it as a permanent program within the organization to ensure its continuity and long-term impact.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative was launched in 2022 with support from the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Programme for the Arabic Language at UNESCO and under the supervision of the Social and Human Sciences Sector. It responds to the longstanding historical, social, cultural, and economic ties between Arab countries and the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean. Successive waves of migration from the Arab world have contributed to shaping societies in these regions, where more than 20 million people are estimated to be of Arab descent.
The recognition came during the initiative's official presentation to UNESCO's Executive Board, marking a strategic step toward institutionalizing it. The initiative has been noted for its contributions to cultural inclusion, promoting dialogue for peace, empowering youth participation, and highlighting the growing role of women in transmitting culture and shaping identity.
The initiative aims to correct stereotypes and enhance mutual understanding through literature, language, archives, and collective memory. It also supports research on the contributions of Arab communities in Latin America as a vital field for cultural and intellectual exchange among civilizations.
