Ankara: Trkiye's Communications Directorate has firmly dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, recently signed by Trkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, conflicts with Article 5 of the NATO treaty or establishes a parallel military alliance.
According to TRTworld.com, Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty stands as NATO's collective defense clause, which stipulates that an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all. In response to these claims, the Directorate's Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) released a statement on the Turkish social platform NSosyal, labeling the allegations as "entirely false" and part of "a perception management campaign whose source is readily apparent."
The DMM clarified that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement does not contradict Trkiye's existing international alliance commitments, including its obligations within NATO. Instead, it serves as a complementary mechanism to support regional security. The statement emphasized, "Trkiye's efforts to develop regional partnerships are not an alternative to its NATO membership."
Furthermore, the agreement was described as "not an aggressive military bloc but a defense-oriented arrangement designed to enhance deterrence." According to the DMM, the agreement does not target any third country or bloc, but rather aims to promote cooperation in the defense industry, military training, technology sharing, and efforts to strengthen regional stability.
The statement also urged the public to disregard "unfounded claims and manipulative posts." This clarification followed remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who stated earlier on Friday that the agreement, signed in Mecca with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, targets no country and remains open to other friendly nations seeking peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.
President Erdogan highlighted that the pact, based on the principle of collective deterrence, aims to strengthen defense cooperation, joint defense industry projects, and counterterrorism efforts. He reaffirmed Trkiye's commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy grounded in international law.
