The Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, announced the imminent opening of arms registration offices in all governorates of the country.
The Ministry stated in a statement: “The National Arms Regulatory Committee organized, today, at the Ministry’s headquarters, a scientific conference, in the presence of many presidents of Iraqi public and private universities, deans of law colleges, the Undersecretary for Police Affairs, and a number of leaders and officers, coinciding with the start of the new academic year with the aim of raising awareness, educating, and informing scientific staff of the Ministry of Interior’s procedures in this regard.”
In his speech at the conference, which bore the name (Preparatory Stages for Registering Weapons and Combating Armed Violence), Al-Shammari stressed “the importance of confining weapons to the state, since Iraq has been subjected to the loss and theft of many weapons during the wars it has gone through by weak souls,” noting that " these weapons are now owned by many people outside the control of the State.”
He pointed out that the government, within its governmental program, is determined to register light weapons, make them known to the state, and control medium and heavy weapons, stressing at the same time the need for the cooperation of all societal groups, including intellectuals, academics, tribal sheikhs, and notables, to confine weapons to the state, declaring that the Ministry of Interior will open weapon registration offices in all governorates of the country, adding that the process of inventorying weapons will be within a deliberate timetable.
For their part, the attendees praised the steps taken by the Ministry of Interior to maintain security and stability, especially its serious efforts to limit weapons to the state.
