Roads Authority Announces Saudi Road Code Requirements for Enhancing Safety in Work Zones

Riyadh: The Roads General Authority stated that the Saudi Road Code has incorporated a series of regulatory and technical requirements aimed at boosting traffic safety in road work zones, safeguarding road users, and maintaining a smooth traffic flow during the execution of projects.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the requirements encompass the creation of a traffic plan endorsed by the relevant authority to regulate entry and exit across all project stages. This includes the installation of secure barriers to segregate work areas from road users and the provision of adequate lighting to ensure visibility at nighttime work sites. There are also specific measures to protect pedestrians, older individuals, and persons with disabilities.

Additionally, the code mandates the installation of temporary directional signs to indicate any lane or speed limit changes. It also requires the provision of safe alternative routes when roads are closed or lanes are reduced, ensuring the continuity of traffic flow with the highest safety standards.

This initiative is part of the authority’s efforts to establish unified standards for all road networks in the Kingdom. It aims to elevate safety and quality levels and achieve the road sector program’s objectives of reaching sixth place globally in the road quality index by 2030, while reducing road fatalities to fewer than five cases per 100,000 people.
