Riyadh: Researchers at Tufts University: Researchers at Tufts University have developed a smart sensing system that monitors plant growth and detects early signs of stress without the need for batteries. Instead, the system draws power from moisture evaporating from the plant.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the sensor is attached directly to the plant, where it collects data and wirelessly transmits it to smartphones or computers using energy harvested from the plant's own moisture.
Tests conducted on bell pepper plants under varying environmental conditions demonstrated the system's ability to accurately detect changes associated with water stress and elevated salinity. The technology also enabled researchers to monitor water movement within the plant in greater detail.
The system harvests energy from the moisture produced by plant transpiration, the natural process through which plants release water vapor through their leaves. A moist-electric generator based on a nanosheet membrane captures this energy to power the sensor, enabling it to operate, process data, and wirelessly transmit measurements to smart devices.
Researchers believe the technology could pave the way for advanced smart agriculture solutions that improve crop monitoring, optimize water use, and reduce reliance on conventional batteries.
