MEWA and UNEP Collaborate on Green University Initiative During Environment Week

Riyadh: The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Council of Universities' Affairs, organized a workshop focused on the Green University concept. This initiative is part of national efforts to promote sustainability in higher education and align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the workshop took place during Environment Week 2026 and examined the framework for transitioning to sustainable universities. The framework is based on five key pillars: green education, research and innovation, campus operations, community engagement, and governance.

Experts at the workshop discussed the anticipated effects of implementing this concept on environmental, educational, and economic aspects. The initiative aims to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and develop national professionals with future-ready skills.

Participants highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive institutional approach that incorporates sustainability into university strategies. They also stressed the importance of strengthening local and international partnerships, emphasizing the critical role of universities as drivers of sustainable development and facilitators of knowledge transfer to society.
