Jazan Region’s Custard Apple Output Tops 42 Tons Annually

Jazan: Jazan Region is strengthening its position as one of the Kingdom's leading agricultural regions, drawing on its natural advantages and environmental and climatic diversity, which have contributed to the successful cultivation of many tropical and subtropical crops. Among them is the custard apple tree, known locally as 'safarjal,' which has emerged as a promising agricultural crop with growing development and economic opportunities. It also supports agricultural sustainability targets and efforts to improve production efficiency.

According to Saudi Press Agency, data from the regional branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture showed that Jazan has more than 4,200 custard apple trees, owned by about 110 farmers, with annual production exceeding 42 tons. This indicator reflects the crop's successful adaptation to the local environment and the added value it represents in diversifying agricultural production and increasing farmers' economic returns.

The custard apple is a fruit tree with distinct nutritional qualities. Its fruit is known for its high nutritional value, sweet taste, and creamy texture. These qualities have contributed to growing demand in local markets and encouraged the expansion of its cultivation as an economically feasible crop with promising marketing opportunities.

Custard apple cultivation is concentrated in the region's mountainous governorates because of their moderate climate, fertile soil, and suitable environment for the crop's growth. Farmers continue to adopt modern agricultural practices and improved irrigation systems, helping raise production quality, improve water-use efficiency, and support the sustainability of agricultural operations.

The Jazan branch of the National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah) continues its efforts to support the crop through research and applied programs aimed at improving varieties, increasing productivity, and transferring modern agricultural technologies to farmers. The branch also provides extension and awareness services that help stabilize production and improve the crop's economic feasibility.
