Historic Jazan Routes Served Trade Caravans and Pilgrims for Centuries

Jazan: Jazan's ancient roads hold a prominent place in history as major routes used by trade caravans and pilgrims traveling between the southern and northern Arabian Peninsula. These pathways played a vital role in commercial and human interaction, carrying goods and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and culture across generations. Their significance stemmed from Jazan's strategic location between Yemen and Makkah, making the region a key transit point for movement and trade.

According to Saudi Press Agency, historical sources describe a network of routes, including a coastal road along the Red Sea and an inland Tihama route. Pilgrims and caravans from Oman, Yemen, and the Horn of Africa traveled these paths on their way to Makkah. Along the routes, service facilities such as wells, rest stations, and supply points were established to support travelers.

Many archaeological remains still trace these ancient roads today, including settlement ruins and pottery fragments, reflecting the rise of urban centers that once supported trade and pilgrimage. Together, these routes formed lifelines connecting people, commerce, and civilization across the Arabian Peninsula.
