The Riyadh Public Transport Project was initiated following studies conducted by the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh (now RCRC) on the capital city’s current and future public transport needs. These studies outlined the best solutions for a sustainable public transit system that reflects the city’s unique urban, population, and traffic characteristics. The comprehensive Public Transport Plan for Riyadh City emerged from these studies, incorporating a metro system and a parallel bus network to address Riyadh’s current and projected mobility needs. A subsequent resolution by the Council of Ministers approved the execution of the R
iyadh Public Transport Project – Metro and Buses. RCRC then initiated a bidding process, attracting several global consortia, culminating in a Royal Decree awarding the Riyadh Metro contracts to three consortia, involving over 19 major global companies from 13 countries.
With the support of HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the RCRC, the project was successfully implemented by RCRC. Recognized as one of the world’s largest public transport projects completed in a single phase, the Riyadh Public Transport project is noted for its meticulous planning, exceptional design, and technology. It is tailored to meet Riyadh’s social, environmental, and urban requirements and is expected to significantly enhance the capital city’s urban mobility, improving the quality of life for its residents and visitors, in line with the objectives of Vision 2030.
