WhatsApp Adds Usernames to Help Keep Phone Numbers Private

Riyadh: WhatsApp has introduced a usernames feature that will allow users to connect with others without having to share their phone numbers, in a move aimed at enhancing privacy and giving users greater control over their personal data.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the company said users can start reserving usernames this week ahead of the feature's gradual rollout over the coming months. Users will receive an in-app notification when the feature becomes available in their countries.

The feature will allow users to start new conversations and join group chats without showing their phone numbers. Phone numbers will remain visible only to contacts and groups with which they have already been shared, while the protection will apply only to new chats.
