Riyadh: The Saudi Green Building Forum (SGBF) participated in the Regional Consultative Meeting for West Asia, held virtually on February 25-26. The meeting was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in cooperation with the Arab League and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), to develop regional recommendations to be presented at the High-Level Political Forum scheduled for July in New York. According to Saudi Press Agency, the recommendations, titled 'Transformative and Coordinated Environmental Solutions for Water, Energy, Industry and Cities in the Arab Region,' were developed with the participation of 107 representatives from 20 Arab countries, including government entities, regional and international organizations, academic institutions, civil-society organizations, and private-sector stakeholders. Discussions focused on enhancing integration across key sectors and improving resource efficiency. The SGBF's presentation on the saaf® index constituted a c entral component of the meeting, contributing to the formulation of regional recommendations by offering a practical framework for measuring and monitoring progress toward a coherent set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), grounded in data, verification, and documentation. Building on this contribution, the recommendations underscore the importance of investing in data systems and strengthening data exchange to address challenges in the water sector, alongside capacity building and resource mobilization. The measures are expected to enhance policy effectiveness and ensure the sustainability of their impact at the regional level. At the opening session, the Arab League representative reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening regional coordination and knowledge exchange to support the development of integrated policies that address environmental and development challenges and promote unified Arab positions at both regional and international levels. SGBF Secretary-General Eng. Faisal Al-Fadl stated that the outcomes of the meeting reflect a growing shift toward evidence-based approaches that reinforce the interlinkages among the SDGs and support policy alignment across water, energy, infrastructure, and urban development within integrated institutional frameworks. He noted that the saaf® system has contributed to documenting 312 projects across 22 Arab countries, thereby enhancing data reliability and highlighting the importance of adopting scalable, context-sensitive measurement models that support evidence-based decision-making. At the conclusion of the meeting, ESCWA emphasized the need for an integrated and coordinated approach to addressing water, energy, industry, and urban challenges, in support of achieving interconnected SDGs, particularly those related to clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation, and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, and partnerships for the goals. The SGBF's participation as a non-government organization with consultative s tatus at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) reflects its role in supporting international partnerships, transferring regional expertise to global platforms, and contributing to the development of evidence-based recommendations that advance sustainable development in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
