Taif: Tamya Lake, located northeast of Taif within the Harrat Kishb lava field, is one of the most prominent and unique geological formations in the Kingdom. Nestled at the center of a wide volcanic crater, it is surrounded by dark rock walls formed by ancient volcanic activity, creating a rare natural landscape that showcases the geological transformations the area has undergone over thousands of years.
According to Saudi Press Agency, cultural historian Mohammed Al-Masoud explained that Tamya Lake serves as an open natural record for studying dormant volcanoes in the Arabian Peninsula. He noted that the water collected in the crater’s center changes color based on rainfall and climatic conditions. The surrounding white salt layers enhance the lake’s visual appeal, making it one of the site’s most distinctive features.
Al-Masoud added that the significance of Tamya Lake extends beyond its geological importance; it also holds a deep cultural dimension in the collective memory of the region. Various stories passed down through generations are associated with the lake, endowing it with heritage value that reinforces its place in the consciousness of local inhabitants. He pointed out that the increasing interest from researchers and nature tourism enthusiasts highlights the site’s potential as an important element in the area’s ecotourism and geological tourism routes.
