Sorghum Harvest in Aseer Boosts Food Security and Economic Growth

Jakarta:Aseer Farms throughout the Aseer Region are experiencing heightened activity as the local sorghum harvest season commences, playing a crucial role in bolstering sustainable rural development and ensuring food security. This initiative is in line with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to diversify economic resources and utilize the unique advantages of different regions. Aseer’s diverse terrain, including plains and mountain peaks, along with varied water resources, contributes to this effort.

According to Saudi Press Agency, during a field tour, they observed farmers actively working on their land. Farmer Mohammed Al-Bariqi from Bariq Governorate highlighted that the region's geographical features have enriched the diversity of its agricultural land. The area includes fertile clay soils along riverbanks, irrigated by floodwaters, yellow soils that dominate most farmland, and mountain terraces reliant on seasonal rainfall. Al-Bariqi emphasized that agricultural output is heavily dependent on abundant rainfall.

The harvest season is also invigorating commercial activity across southern Saudi Arabia, with increased market activities and sales driven by the cultural significance of sorghum in Aseeri cuisine. This crop's historical relevance is fostering new investment opportunities in food processing and related sectors, such as the production of premium flour, gluten-free items, and animal feed.

These endeavors align with government strategies to reinforce the geographical identity of Aseer products and leverage digital solutions to connect farmers with markets directly.
