According to Saudi Press Agency, the plant has a production capacity of 664,000 cubic meters per day, making it one of the largest and most advanced desalination projects. Its significant role in water supply is particularly vital during times of high consumption, such as the Hajj season.
Shuaiba-5 is notable for its operational efficiency, achieving the lowest energy consumption rate in its category globally at 2.34 kilowatt-hour per cubic meter. This efficiency is a result of using advanced technologies, including reverse osmosis membranes, pressure recovery systems, efficient pretreatment processes, and partial solar energy integration.
The plant’s performance supports the national water sector’s target of reducing energy usage by 30% by 2030. This goal is part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term security and sustainability of the water supply through technological investments and operational improvements.
