SFDA Laboratories Ensure Food Safety for Pilgrims during Hajj Season

Riyadh: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) laboratories are fully prepared to ensure the safety of food and drugs for pilgrims during the Hajj season 1446 AH, reflecting the authority’s core commitment to serving pilgrims and safeguarding the products under its supervision.

According to Saudi Press Agency, SFDA laboratories are equipped with advanced technologies and analytical equipment, adhere to the highest international standards, and operate in close coordination with numerous government authorities.

Its advanced equipment enables the detection of a wide range of contaminants, including pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, toxins, and various organic and inorganic pollutants. It also facilitates the analysis of food additives, pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing agents.

The laboratory efforts complement the work of inspection teams by supporting the systematic collection, analysis, and examination of food samples, as well as implementing targeted field studies that enable the SFDA to refine its procedures and make informed decisions based on accurate, detailed data, ultimately enhancing the protection of pilgrims’ health and well-being.

A key function of the laboratories during the Hajj season is inspecting food imports entering through border crossings to ensure strict adherence to Saudi, Gulf, and international standards before the products reach pilgrims. Particular emphasis is placed on perishable goods such as meat, poultry, dairy, water, juices, and ready-to-eat meals, with the aim of minimizing the spread of bacteria and microbes and ensuring the provision of safe and healthy nourishment.

Operating at peak capacity throughout the Hajj season, the laboratories maintain efficient workflows in line with established international best practices. This demonstrates a high level of readiness and inherent operational efficiency, enabling them to handle increased volumes without relying on temporary surge capacity, while consistently upholding high quality standards and rapid performance.
