SDRPY to Implement Power Projects in Yemen

Riyadh: The Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) Thursday with Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy and Gulf Power International (GPI) on implementing power projects in Yemen. Yemeni Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Braik and Saudi Ambassador to Yemen and SDRPY General-Supervisor Mohammed Al Jaber witnessed the signing. The MoU outlines cooperation between the three sides to implement a series of development projects in the electricity sector, including strategic power facilities in Aden, Mukalla, Seiyun, and Taiz, with a first-phase production capacity of 300 megawatts.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the agreement aligns with the Saudi leadership’s directives to support the Yemeni government and promote development in key sectors, improve daily life across Yemeni governorates, and foster sustainable growth. It also reflects the Yemeni prime minister’s focus on strengthening essential services through bilateral cooperation between the two nations in various fields.

The MoU aims to enhance infrastructure, serve local communities, and improve the quality of services provided to the Yemeni people as part of ongoing economic reforms. It includes standards for training, sustainability, and implementation according to quality benchmarks and timelines.

SDRPY’s projects and initiatives have contributed to increasing electricity production capacity in multiple governorates, bolstering the Yemeni government’s ability to deliver educational, health and other essential services, and expanding the use of renewable energy in various projects.

To date, the program’s initiatives have benefited over 12 million people, including through the Saudi Oil Derivatives Grant, which has supported the operation of 80 power generation stations across Yemen.
