Saudi Red Sea Authority Collaborates with International Registries to Boost Yacht Tourism

Riyadh:The Saudi Red Sea Authority (SRSA) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with International Registries, Inc. at the Monaco Yacht Show. This agreement aims to enhance the appeal of the Red Sea to private yacht owners and expand chartering opportunities under regulated conditions. The collaboration seeks to stimulate yacht tourism and increase investment in marinas and related services.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the memorandum includes the recognition of the Yacht Engaged in Trade (YET) program within the Red Sea's jurisdiction. This initiative allows eligible private yachts to be chartered for limited periods while maintaining their private registration, without switching to commercial registration, provided they meet applicable requirements and regulations.

The YET program is designed to reduce administrative burdens and costs associated with registration changes, enabling yacht owners to operate within a clear regulatory framework that upholds high safety standards. By doing so, it is expected to increase the variety of yachts available for charter, offer visitors more choices, and enhance the attractiveness of coastal destinations to regional and international yachts.

Economic benefits from this initiative are anticipated to impact businesses servicing yachts, owners, and guests. An increase in yacht arrivals is expected to raise demand for marina berths, maintenance, and related services, while also boosting spending in local accommodation, hospitality, and entertainment. This could improve marina occupancy and returns on investments in marine infrastructure.

The growth in yachting activity is set to create opportunities within marina operations, yacht chartering, and support services, supporting job creation in navigation and marine tourism activities. This development will allow coastal destinations to benefit more broadly from the sector's expansion.

Furthermore, the MoU facilitates the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and cooperation in reviewing best practices for safety, environmental sustainability, and marine protection. SRSA and International Registries will coordinate these efforts through designated representatives and regular meetings, leveraging international practices to advance the sector's growth.

The agreement underscores SRSA's dedication to creating a regulatory environment that accommodates yacht owners and operators while ensuring safety and environmental compliance. Through these international partnerships, SRSA aims to enhance coastal tourism and strengthen the Red Sea's competitiveness as a yachting hub, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's goals for economic diversification and increased tourism contributions to the GDP.
