Tunis: The Arab League of Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) has hosted a media day event at its headquarters in Tunis to assess the needs and damages affecting educational, cultural, and scientific conditions in Arab states experiencing conflicts, crises, disasters, and emergencies. This initiative, proposed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aims to enhance coordination with affected states and identify their technical and financial requirements, reflecting the Kingdom’s active role as chair of ALECSO’s Executive Council in supporting Arab interests.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the event, endorsed by Arab countries, featured presentations and reports highlighting the realities in Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Libya, Lebanon, and Yemen. These contributions included data and accounts detailing the state of education, culture, and science under exceptional circumstances in these nations.

Approval of Saudi Arabia’s media day proposal coincided with the Executive Council’s 123rd session, held in Tunis in May 2025, where the council also adopted a Saudi proposal to establish a committee for monitoring educational, cultural, and scientific conditions in countries affected by crises. The committee was formed under Lebanon’s chairmanship, with membership from 10 states: Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Palestine, Qatar, Libya, Egypt, Morocco, and Yemen.

The 27th regular session of ALECSO’s General Conference, chaired by Saudi Arabia and held in Jeddah in May 2024, approved a Libyan proposal to add a permanent agenda item on educational, cultural, and scientific conditions in states affected by conflicts, crises, disasters, and emergencies. The conference called on ALECSO to liaise with the affected states, assess their technical and financial needs, and submit a comprehensive report on the matter in response to requests from the concerned countries.
