Riyadh: Saudi chess recorded a major leap in development during 2025, driven by sustained efforts led by the Saudi Chess Federation under the chairmanship of Mohammed Al-Masoudi. The year also marked significant progress in expanding the player base across all age groups, alongside a growing international presence that strengthened the Kingdom's standing on the regional and global chess stage.

According to Saudi Press Agency, chess activity expanded across the Kingdom throughout the year, with 12 cities hosting dozens of official federation-sanctioned tournaments, including internationally rated events. This surge in competition contributed to a record rise in the number of registered players, which exceeded 5,000 in 2025.

The Saudi Chess Federation also increased the number of registered athletes in the official database through targeted talent recruitment programs and by expanding the use of the international rating system. These initiatives strengthened the player pipeline and boosted participation among young players and women.

Saudi players delivered strong performances at Arab and international tournaments throughout the year, including the Abu Dhabi International Championship for adults and various age groups, as well as the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2025. These results were reflected in improved international ratings issued by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), which reinforced the Kingdom's growing profile in global chess and enhanced the competitive standing of its players.
