Cairo:Saudi Arabia called for strengthened joint Arab efforts to tackle growing environmental challenges during the 37th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the session was held at the League of Arab States headquarters, where Abdulrahman Alfadley, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, delivered the Kingdom's remarks. Saudi Arabia emphasized supporting efforts to protect the environment and ensure sustainability for future generations.
The Kingdom highlighted the necessity for coordinated regional and international efforts to address environmental challenges such as desertification, land degradation, drought, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Alfadley noted that through Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Environment Strategy, Saudi Arabia is advancing environmental action at various levels. This strategy includes an integrated institutional and legislative framework to strengthen environmental protection and sustain natural resources.
Alfadley also discussed the use of modern technologies and support for research and innovation to monitor and address these environmental challenges. He mentioned the Middle East Green Initiative, which includes 35 countries and several pioneering environmental initiatives that have gained G20 leaders' support.
Furthermore, Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia's presidency of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which led to the adoption of 37 decisions, including the Business for Land Initiative and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership. He emphasized Saudi Arabia's commitment to implementing these outcomes under the Riyadh Action Agenda until the next session in Mongolia.
The minister reiterated Saudi Arabia's support for joint Arab efforts, aiming to strengthen cooperation among Arab countries to address environmental challenges. This commitment contributes to sustainable development and the protection of natural resources for future generations.
Before the council session, Saudi Arabia participated in the fifth Arab Forum for Environment, focusing on sustainable rangelands and enhanced resilience, among other issues. The Kingdom's involvement underlines its dedication to joint Arab environmental action and regional cooperation, including initiatives like the Middle East Green Initiative.
