Saudi Arabia Amplifies Awareness Efforts on World Sickle Cell Day

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia joins the global community in observing World Sickle Cell Day. It intensifies efforts to raise awareness among individuals and the broader society about the seriousness of sickle cell disease, contributing to global prevention initiatives. These efforts include organizing exhibitions, workshops, and lectures, as well as distributing educational brochures that emphasize the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment. Awareness campaigns are carried out in healthcare facilities, including hospitals and primary health centers, throughout the Kingdom’s regions and governorates.

According to Saudi Press Agency, World Sickle Cell Day, observed annually on June 19, aims to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, provide support to those affected, and promote early and accurate diagnosis. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited disorders that affect red blood cells. Typically, healthy red blood cells are round and flexible, allowing them to move smoothly through small blood vessels and deliver oxygen throughout the body. However, in people with sickle cell disease, the red blood cells become rigid, sticky, and shaped like a crescent or “C” – commonly referred to as sickle cells. These abnormally shaped cells can block blood flow, leading to other serious health complications.
