Jazan: Salam trees (Acacia ehrenbergiana) are among the most prominent desert plants in Jazan Region, representing a unique model of resilience in harsh environments and providing both environmental and economic benefits, making them a key element of the region's natural ecosystem.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Salam trees are widely distributed across valleys and lowlands, where they adapt remarkably to drought, high temperatures, and harsh climatic conditions. These trees play a pivotal role in maintaining environmental balance in desert habitats.
They bloom during the spring season, producing fine yellow flowers clustered together that form a rich source of nectar for bees. From this nectar, a distinctive honey is produced, known for its deep dark color, strong aroma, and sharp taste. This honey is considered a natural food rich in easily absorbed sugars and antioxidants, while also contributing to the local economy through its production and marketing.
Salam trees play an active role in supporting environmental diversity and wildlife, as well as stabilizing soil and reducing desertification. Their deep roots help prevent sand and soil erosion, enhancing the stability of the region's natural environment.
