Riyadh: Russian medical teams have successfully performed what was described as the world's first skull base surgery on a 101-year-old patient at a hospital affiliated with Samara State Medical University.

According to Saudi Press Agency, head of the hospital's Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Olesya Naberezhneva, stated that the procedure was conducted after the patient developed sphenoid sinusitis. The patient was kept under medical observation at the hospital for a week before being discharged as his condition improved.

Naberezhneva explained that the decision to perform the surgery was driven by the seriousness of the patient's condition. Although the hospital routinely carries out such procedures, this instance marked the first time it was performed on a patient of such advanced age.

The case underscores the possibility of reconsidering age-related restrictions on certain surgical procedures. This is particularly pertinent as modern medical technologies advance and clear clinical indications support successful outcomes.
