Royal Saudi Naval Forces Bolstered by Sarawat and Tuwaiq Projects

Riyadh:The Ministry of Defense is accelerating the development of a modern naval force equipped with advanced combat systems, high operational efficiency, and qualified national personnel. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Defense Development Program, launched under the vision of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and approved by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on February 26, 2018.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the program establishes a comprehensive operating model, governance structure, and organizational framework to optimize spending, modernize armaments, build joint operational superiority, boost morale, and localize military industries. Central to this strategy is empowering the Royal Saudi Naval Forces to safeguard the Kingdom's extensive Red Sea and Arabian Gulf coastlines, secure critical maritime corridors, protect strategic assets, and support regional and international maritime stability.

The Royal Saudi Naval Forces are enhancing their combat readiness, technical systems, and human capital through strategic programs like the Sarawat and Tuwaiq projects. These initiatives focus on modernization, technology transfer, domestic defense industrialization, workforce training, and naval base infrastructure expansion in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.

The Sarawat Project is integral to developing naval capabilities, providing an ecosystem centered on multi-mission combat vessels, technology transfer, and supply sustainability. This project includes the delivery of eight Avante 2200 corvettes, along with logistics, maintenance facilities, and simulation training. The initiative has already seen the manufacturing of five combat vessels, including HMS Al Jubail and HMS Al Diriyah, and is moving into its second phase with the construction of additional vessels and specialized training for Saudi engineers.

The Tuwaiq Project aims to advance naval readiness by constructing four Multi-Mission Surface Combatant vessels and expanding naval infrastructure, such as the King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jubail. This project reflects a partnership with the United States, focusing on technology transfer and local content development to create high-value technical jobs.

Together, the Sarawat and Tuwaiq projects demonstrate a strategic roadmap for integrating defense manufacturing localization, advanced weapon systems, global partnerships, and infrastructural modernization, ensuring a capable and sustainable naval force under Saudi Vision 2030.
