Riyadh: In the arid expanse of the Northern Borders Region the woolly bassia (Bassia eriophora) plant is well known for its ability to thrive in harsh desert conditions, playing a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and wildlife in the area.
According to Saudi Press Agency, classified among annual herbaceous plants, it flourishes in sandy, arid soils due to its remarkable ability to withstand water scarcity and high temperatures. Its signature branched stems and velvety leaves, resembling a woolly texture, bloom with delicate flowers in specific seasons.
The plant plays a significant role in maintaining ecosystem balance by helping prevent wind-induced soil erosion. It also provides a vital source of natural pastures for livestock, particularly camels and sheep, during specific times of the year.
