Madinah: The Exhibition of the Architecture of the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah highlights the history of the construction of the Prophet's Mosque and the successive stages of its expansion, offering a cultural and educational experience that sheds light on its architectural components and engineering details, reflecting its religious and historical status as Islam's second holiest site.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the exhibition has been witnessing increasing visitor turnout during the holy month of Ramadan. The exhibition, operated by the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, aims to highlight the history of the Prophet's Mosque architecture and the continuous efforts devoted to its care throughout the ages.
It also seeks to preserve and document its historical stages, enriching visitors' experience and strengthening their religious and historical connection with the mosque. Located south of the Prophet's Mosque, the exhibition spans about 2,200 square meters and includes several sections presenting the development of the mosque's architecture across different eras. These are illustrated through models and architectural replicas showing the mosque's form during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), followed by the period of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, later Islamic eras, and the expansions carried out during the Saudi era.
Moreover, the exhibition features rare historical artifacts and items related to the architecture of the Prophet's Mosque, along with historical photographs and engineering drawings documenting the different stages of its construction and expansions. It also presents key architectural elements of the mosque-such as the pulpit, mihrab, doors, domes, canopies, and minarets-highlighting the distinctive artistic and engineering aspects of its architecture.
The exhibition relies on modern display methods and interactive technologies, including digital screens and visual media, enabling visitors to explore the architectural details of the Prophet's Mosque through a simplified educational approach that enhances understanding of its history and enriches their cultural experience during visits to Madinah. The exhibition represents one of the cultural initiatives that highlight the historical and Islamic heritage of Madinah and serves as a foundation for several specialized museums and exhibitions dedicated to documenting the history of the Prophet's Mosque and introducing visitors to its civilizational and architectural dimensions.
