Pinwheel Galaxy Illuminates Skies over Northern Borders Region

Qatif: The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) was spotted in the sky above Al-Sahla area, south of Rafha in Northern Borders Region, as it appeared alongside the constellation Ursa Major (Great Bear), drawing the attention of amateur astronomers and photographers.

According to Saudi Press Agency, member of the AFAQ Society for Astronomy, Barjas Al-Fulaih, stated that the galaxy is a massive spiral system distinguished by its prominent arms, which give it a whirlpool-like appearance. He noted that it is larger than the Milky Way galaxy and is known for its numerous bright star-forming regions.

He explained that the Pinwheel Galaxy is located approximately 27 million light-years from Earth, noting that March is among the best months for observing it, either at the beginning or end of the month.
