NIHR participates in OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission session

Jeddah: The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Dr. Malallah Al Hamadi, member of the Board of Commissioners and Head of the committee in charge of visiting detention places and the institution’s facilities, participated in the 19th regular session of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The meeting was held over two consecutive days at OIC Secretariat General in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The session emphasised the key role of the national institutions for human rights in the member states in implementing the Sustainable Development Plan 2030, promoting human rights and enhancing awareness of the importance of integrating human rights in making policies. Monitoring human rights violations and investigating them through regional and international mechanisms was also spotlighted.

The discussion session saw the participation of a number of experts from international human rights organisations, the organisation’s specialised institutions, representatives of the member states that have the right to vote, in addition to states that have the “observer” status in the organisation and their national institutions concerned with human rights.

The discussions resulted in a number of recommendations reached by the participants, which will be incorporated in the final document.
