The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is hosting the ninth conference of environment ministers in the Islamic world, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in cooperation with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), with the participation of (52) countries, on 3-4 Rabi’ al-Thani 1445 AH, corresponding to October 18-19 in Jeddah, under the slogan “Towards achieving the green transformation in the Islamic world.”
The conference will be launched under the presidency of the Kingdom, and in the presence of the environment ministers of the organization’s member states, and representatives of (30) regional and international organizations concerned with environmental affairs, and it will be held simultaneously with the conference. The sixth meeting of the Executive Office for the Environment in the Islamic World, with the participation of the nine member states of the Executive Office, and a number of regional and international organizations, in addition to the accompanying exhibition on the sidelines of the conference.
The conference witnesses the presentation of the Kingdom’s Award for Environmental Management in its third edition, in which the number of winners reaches (21) winners from (18) Islamic countries, distributed among the four branches of the award, which include the areas of best research, achievements and environmental practices, and best practices or pioneering activities in the field of environment and development. Sustainable public benefit associations and civil society associations that can be disseminated in member states, in addition to women’s pioneering activities in environmental work, and the best environmentally friendly green Islamic cities.
The conference will discuss a number of reports and topics related to environmental issues and sustainable development in the Islamic world, and the efforts of organizations to achieve human environmental security and raise the quality of life, in addition to activating joint action in stimulating environmental and development work, innovative solutions to current and future environmental problems, and other related topics. Common affairs among member states, including the report of the sixth meeting of the Executive Office for the Environment in the Islamic World, a report on ISESCO’s activities in the field of environment and sustainable development, and a report on the progress made in the project to establish the Islamic Academy for Environment and Sustainable Development.
The conference will also discuss a draft program for managing environmental risks and natural disasters, a draft guideline on best practices in the field of green transformation, and a draft strategy for smart and sustainable cities in the Islamic world.
In addition, the conference agenda includes scientific sessions discussing the green transformation in the Islamic world under the title (Challenges and Opportunities), artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in order to achieve sustainable development goals. A ministerial meeting will also be held. To elect the members of the Islamic Executive Office for the Environment, and to determine the location and date of the next session of the conference.
It is noteworthy that the first session of the conference was launched in June 2002, in the city of Jeddah. The conference laid the first building blocks for joint Islamic action in the field of the environment. By adopting a founding document entitled “Jeddah’s Pledges for Sustainable Development.”
