Riyadh: The 2026-2027 hunting season in the Kingdom coincides with the annual fall bird migration through the Northern Borders Region, where environmental regulations play a vital role in protecting migratory corridors and resting habitats.
According to Saudi Press Agency, running from early September through January 31, 2027, the sixth regulated hunting season organized by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW) permits the hunting of 30 designated species under approved quotas and conditions. The season is divided into a fall phase running from September 1 to November 30, 2026, and a winter phase lasting from December 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027, ensuring balanced wildlife management and ecological sustainability.
The valleys, ravines, depressions, and pastoral plains of the Northern Borders Region serve as essential stopovers for migratory birds journeying south. Passing species include the willow warbler, spotted flycatcher, M©n©tries's warbler, common whitethroat, European bee-eater, and greater sand plover, alongside shrikes, larks, herons, and raptors.
Aman Environmental Association President Nasser Al-Majlad noted that local vegetation, seasonal shrubs, and valleys provide food and shelter, allowing birds to replenish energy during long-distance flights. He underscored the need for continuous field monitoring, preservation of vegetation cover, and strict adherence to NCW hunting guidelines to safeguard these species throughout their transit.
