Makkah Region’s Coastal Islands Drive Sustainable Tourism and the Blue Economy

Riyadh: Numerous islands stretch along the coast of Makkah Region, many of which remain largely untouched. These islands rank among the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's most valuable coastal tourism assets, featuring white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, thriving coral reefs, and rich biodiversity that offer strong potential for responsible investment.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the region's western coastline is receiving growing attention through the development of high-quality marine destinations that capitalize on its natural and environmental assets in line with sustainability standards. These efforts seek to balance economic development with the conservation of natural resources and reinforce the blue economy as one of Saudi Arabia's future drivers of growth.

The Saudi Red Sea Authority is advancing the sustainable development of coastal destinations through a regulatory framework that supports responsible growth. One example is Thuwal Private Retreat, developed, owned, and operated by Red Sea Global on an island within a coral archipelago off the Jeddah coast. The resort is reserved for one group at a time and offers experiences tailored to guests' preferences.

The responsible development of islands and coastal destinations reflects a balanced approach that places environmental protection at its core. It also strengthens the Red Sea's position as an emerging global marine destination, supporting Saudi Arabia's competitiveness in sustainable coastal tourism.
