Lyrid Meteor Shower to Illuminate the Kingdom’s Skies

Jeddah: The Noor Astronomical Society announced that skies over Saudi Arabia and the Arab world are set to witness the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower during the late hours of Wednesday night and Thursday dawn. The society emphasized that this celestial event is accessible to everyone willing to step outside and look up.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this shower is one of the oldest astronomical phenomena, with historical records indicating it was first observed around 2,700 years ago, specifically in 687 BC. This makes the Lyrid meteor shower one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, a testament to humanity's long-standing interest in the night sky.

Society President Issa Al-Ghafili noted that observing this phenomenon requires no telescopes or advanced equipment. It can be viewed with the naked eye from open locations away from light pollution sources, from midnight until dawn, offering a simple yet profound experience for those who venture out.
