Jeddah: The planetarium at King Abdulaziz University has solidified its role as a pivotal center for space science and research, recently participating in the observation of a lunar eclipse, an event that drew attention from both the public and scientific communities.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the planetarium, part of the university’s Department of Astronomy and Space Science, is renowned for its advanced observatory. This facility serves as a crucial educational and research resource, allowing students and researchers to engage in direct observation of celestial phenomena and simulate the movements of various celestial bodies including stars, planets, the moon, and the sun. This hands-on approach effectively bridges theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
In addition to its observational capabilities, the planetarium is a hub of academic activity, contributing to the field through specialized research in astronomy and space sciences. It offers advanced degree programs, including master’s and doctoral studies, and is instrumental in developing innovative curricula that align with the latest global trends in the field.
Annually, the planetarium attracts over 5,000 visitors, ranging from school and university students to astronomy enthusiasts. Inside its dome, which spans 10 meters and includes 42 seats, visitors can participate in interactive shows and lectures designed to create a comprehensive learning environment.
