Riyadh: Scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in collaboration with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), have developed a new design for lithium-metal batteries that incorporates nylon, potentially increasing power and reducing costs.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the recent study emphasizes the advantages of lithium-metal batteries, which are known for their high energy density and lightweight characteristics. These batteries outperform traditional lithium-ion batteries, making them suitable for robotics, transportation, and consumer electronics. Despite their potential, the current production of lithium-metal batteries involves hazardous and corrosive chemicals that affect both efficiency and safety.
Professor Husam Alshareef, head of the KAUST Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Storage Technologies, stated that his research team is focused on creating renewable energy and storage solutions to promote decarbonization in the Kingdom. He highlighted that this discovery not only promises cheaper and safer additives but also showcases the benefits of fundamental scientific research.
