Thuwal:King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has created a computational prototype aimed at improving mineral exploration in Saudi Arabia. This initiative seeks to leverage artificial intelligence to reduce uncertainty in exploring geological formations beneath the Arabian Shield, a region known for its mineral wealth.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the research project is led by Professors George Turkiyyah and David Keyes in collaboration with geophysical imaging experts from the University of British Columbia in Canada. The project has garnered the attention of Maaden, Saudi Arabia's national mining company, resulting in a 30-month research and development contract. This collaboration offers a path for testing and deploying the prototype using real Saudi geological data.
The development of the computational prototype was facilitated by KAUST's infrastructure, which enabled researchers to create and refine a proof-of-concept solution. This work underscores KAUST's mission to align its scientific innovations with industry needs, supporting research and development in areas crucial to national interests.
