Jazan Artisans Turn Palm Fronds, Leaves into Artistic Heritage Crafts

Jazan: Traditional handicrafts in Jazan Region are a cornerstone of this folk heritage, meeting household needs while supporting adaptation to local lifestyles and strengthening the family economy. Jazan’s women have played a pivotal role in this tradition, excelling since ancient times in transforming simple materials such as palm fronds and dried leaves into artistic pieces.

According to Saudi Press Agency, using natural resources and skilled craftsmanship, they produce items including prayer mats, food bowls, and storage boxes. They also crafted small baskets in various sizes used by jasmine vendors to carry their goods across the region, as well as the ‘umbrella hat,’ worn for sun protection, made from lightweight, eco-friendly materials.

Once completed, the crafts are marketed by men in traditional markets across the region’s governorates, which continue to attract both locals and visitors according to their needs.
