Islamic Development Bank Institute and Awqaf Mauritius Foundation Convene International Waqf Conference to Foster CommunityEmpowerment

Port louis: The Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) and the Awqaf Mauritius Foundation (AMF) recently concluded the International Waqf Conference in Port Louis, Mauritius, running from September 3 to 5, 2026. The event was aimed at revitalizing the waqf institution as a modern catalyst for socio-economic development and community empowerment.

According to African Press Organization, the conference was organized under the theme "Reviving Waqf for Community Empowerment: Building Strong Waqf Foundations through Strategic Management, Good Governance and Sustainable Investment." It offered a high-level platform for discussing how waqf can be transformed into a driver of sustainable development.

The three-day event attracted a diverse group of participants, including ministers, lawmakers, waqf founders, diplomats, legal practitioners, NGOs, and academics, from countries such as Comoros, Madagascar, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. Discussions focused on governance models, asset development strategies, and the role of waqf institutions in promoting transparency and accountability.

The conference commenced with a welcome address by AMF Chairman Dr. Najmul Hussein Rassool and featured speeches from key figures like Minister Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem and Minister Shakeel Ahmed Yousuf Abdul Razack Mohamed. A keynote address by Mr. Yahya Aleem ur Rehman from IsDBI highlighted the potential of waqf in socio-economic development.

Over the first two days, participants explored the history and principles of waqf, governance models, and international experiences. A panel discussion on the Waqf Act 1941 and a session on financing waqf projects by IsDB's Awqaf Properties Investment Fund emphasized the importance of legal frameworks and innovative financing.

The conference concluded with a workshop on strengthening waqf leadership, focusing on practical training for waqf managers and legal practitioners. Experts shared insights on governance structures, investment policies, and the use of technology in waqf administration.

The participation of IsDBI and APIF representatives highlighted the IsDB Group's commitment to supporting Islamic social finance institutions. The conference underscored the importance of knowledge-based solutions and capacity development in unlocking the developmental potential of waqf.
