Riyadh: The Ministry of Health, represented by Seha Virtual Hospital (SVH), announced the results of a national clinical study published in the international journal JMIR Diabetes. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision techniques for early detection of diabetic foot complications via noncontact thermal imaging.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the study was registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) and led by the digital clinical trials center at SVH. The study involved collaboration with researchers from the Ministry of Health and King Saud University, utilizing Amplifai Health technology for data collection and analysis.
The study employed the TFscan system, which utilizes AI algorithms and computer vision to analyze thermal patterns on the feet. The sample included 200 participants, with 100 individuals having diabetes and 100 being healthy. The results indicated that patients with diabetes exhibited between-foot thermal differences nearly four times higher than those without diabetes. This served as an early indicator of reduced blood perfusion and a higher risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers.
SVH highlighted that the technology is safe and easy to deploy, requiring no laboratory tests or specialized supervision. It relies on thermal imaging devices powered by AI, making it suitable for primary healthcare centers, community health programs, and even home use. This technology can facilitate early intervention, reduce the need for amputations, and improve patients’ quality of life.
