Grand Mosque’s Escalators, Elevators Serve Over 200,000 Pilgrims Per Hour

Mecca: The General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque continues to deliver exceptional services to the pilgrims during the 1446 AH Hajj season through a fully integrated system of facilities designed to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims.

According to Saudi Press Agency, among the most prominent of these services are the escalators and elevators, which collectively facilitate the movement of more than 200,000 pilgrims per hour within the Grand Mosque and its surrounding courtyards, always ensuring smooth, efficient, and convenient access for worshippers.

Currently, more than 220 escalators are in operation across various key locations, including the second Saudi expansion, the Al-Masa’a (area between Safa and Marwah), restroom zones, and the entrances to the Grand Mosque from the Small Market Tunnel. These systems function with high reliability and efficiency, even under peak operating conditions.

The presidency has placed great emphasis on the periodic maintenance of all vertical transportation systems to guarantee continuous, safe, and effective performance. Additionally, robust safety and protection measures have been implemented to prevent accidents and uphold the highest standards of safety for all pilgrims.
