Film Criticism Conference Returns to Riyadh with Global Participation.

Riyadh: The second Film Criticism Conference began yesterday in Riyadh and is set to continue until November 10. The conference, hosted by the Saudi Film Commission, has drawn substantial global attention, attracting notable filmmakers, critics, and cinephiles from across the world.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the event is held under the theme “Sound in Cinema” and seeks to delve into the influence of sound on the film experience and its broader impact on the film industry. The discussions at the conference will cover various elements, such as film scores, sound effects, and natural sounds, while also exploring different aspects of cinema and the field of film criticism.

The conference features panel discussions and presentations where specialists and critics will share their views and insights. The opening ceremony included an introductory video about the conference, outlining its objectives and past achievements, followed by a speech from Saudi Film Commission CEO Abdullah Al-Qahtani. He highlighted the theme’s relevance and the commission’s commitment to developing a robust film industry, in line with Saudi Vision 2030. Al-Qahtani emphasized the empowerment of criticism as an intellectual and artistic tool that guides cinema and opens new avenues for exploration.

Prominent Saudi director Abdullah Al-Mohaisen remarked on the essential role of film criticism, stating: “Film criticism relies on sentient, honest, and purposeful criticism. It is the dynamic driver of development and creativity for the director. Cinema is and will always be a message before being anything else.” His speech was followed by a screening of “Assassination of a City,” a significant Saudi documentary that has garnered international acclaim.
