Riyadh: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) praised Saudi Arabia’s success in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce emissions by more than 588,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually and to improve energy and water efficiency, through ACWA Power’s Monitoring and Prediction Center (MPC).
According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative is included in the ITU report, which showcases success stories of member states integrating digital technologies into climate action, published during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil.
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) emphasized that this international recognition reflects the Kingdom’s pioneering efforts in using digital technologies and AI to support climate action, aligning with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, one of the key programs of the Saudi Vision 2030.
It also promotes the Kingdom’s position as a global hub for advanced technologies and an attractive destination for AI innovations and digital talents across various fields, as part of its strides to build an integrated digital ecosystem that contributes to achieving digital sustainability and comprehensive development.
ACWA Power stated that this recognition highlights the company’s ongoing investment in developing innovative digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
The company noted that the Monitoring and Prediction Center (MPC) is a key national example of leveraging AI and advanced technologies to promote environmental sustainability and improve energy and water-use efficiency, aligning with the Kingdom’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2060.
The conference also featured the participation of the Digital Sustainability Team Lead Ghada Alothman, in the ‘From Commitment to Action: Reflecting on One Year of the Green Digital Action Declaration’ session, as she highlighted the Kingdom’s experience in integrating digital solutions into climate policies and the role of digital technologies in achieving national objectives.
CST’s participation at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) stems from its key role in promoting digital sustainability and linking technical transformation with climate action.
It also reinforces the Kingdom’s position as a global partner in building a sustainable digital future.
