Riyadh: The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) announced the release of the “Radio Spectrum Regulations for Aeronautical Services” and the “Radio Spectrum Regulations for Program Making and Special Events (PMSE).” The regulations aim to enhance the optimal use of radio spectrum in the Kingdom, improve the quality of radio services, and promote regulatory compliance, thus maximizing the utilization of the radio spectrum and increasing its efficiency in the Kingdom.
According to Saudi Press Agency, CST indicated that the regulations would have a positive impact on related sectors by enabling aeronautical services and PMSE applications to operate in an interference-free environment. They will also boost the Kingdom’s readiness to accommodate the expansion of advanced wireless technologies and meet future demand.
CST stated that the “Radio Spectrum Regulations for Aeronautical Services” govern the use of radio spectrum for aeronautical applications such as airborne weather radars, aeronautical radionavigation systems, air traffic control systems, radio altimeter systems, search-and-rescue systems, and other applications used in aeronautical services. The regulations were developed in coordination with the General Authority of Civil Aviation to ensure an integrated and harmonized approach to radio spectrum regulation for these applications.
In addition, CST stated that the “Radio Spectrum Regulations for Program Making and Special Events (PMSE)” govern the use of radio spectrum, in coordination with relevant entities, for operating wireless microphones, wireless audio and video transmission systems, remote control systems, wireless cameras, and other wireless applications used in media broadcasting, television coverage, live performances, cultural and religious events, and sports and entertainment events. The regulations also cover the use of such applications in radio and television studios, educational institutions, conference halls, theaters, and other facilities that employ equipment used in PMSE.
CST emphasized that compliance with these regulations is essential to prevent harmful radio interference and to ensure a safe and reliable operating environment. Non-compliance may result in technical and operational challenges that could adversely affect the quality of radio spectrum services, including potential service interruptions or harmful interference that may disrupt technical systems.
CST previously invited the public to provide their input on the two regulations and received numerous comments and suggestions from various entities. This reflects CST’s commitment to engaging stakeholders in shaping the future of radio spectrum use in the Kingdom.
